DESCRIPTION
This game was a second year assignment that aimed to combine gameplay and level design with aspects of narrative in a cohesive way. The players goal is to clear the area of infected robots that have taken over. Narrative is used to explain the story and lore but also to give hints at gameplay and what the player needs to do. As the player progresses they unlock new abilities that allow then progress to new areas.

Level Design Planning

I created a mental map to plan out the level, this allowed me to plan out the rough shape and flow of the map before making it. I included pillars that the player has to activate, tress, rocks and enemies.
This helped me plan out the flow of the game play as well as the narrative. I marked certain points where the player must find an item in order to progress which meant I could plan locations of things like enemies and activatable pillars.
Gameplay
The main progression of the game is based around upgrade chips. The players character is a robot designed to have special abilities, but they have been in sleep mode for a long time which means that at the start of the game the player is missing a lot of basic abilities that allow them to progress. They player must first find upgrade chips for give new abilities like jumping, shooting and fire resistance. A lot of the narrative is also revealed through chips, as the player progresses and explores they will find voice logs of a robot who was around a long time ago that explain the lore and why they player is in the position they are now.
